Privacy Policy

Every License Plate (“the App”) is developed by JMEA Labs. This policy explains what information the App handles and how it is used.

Information stored on your device

Spotted plates, settings, inbox state, and achievement progress are stored locally on your device. Your spotted plates are also backed up to our servers, as described under “Backups” below. Settings, inbox state, and achievement progress are not backed up. Usage events sent to our analytics provider can include which plates you spot, as described under “Analytics and crash data” below.

Backups

So you can restore your collection on a new or reset device, the App backs up your spotted plates to our server. For each spotted plate, the backup holds the plate, the date you spotted it, and the U.S. state you were in when you spotted it (if known). The backup is stored under a random backup ID that the App creates. It is not linked to your name, email address, or purchase account, and it does not include your GPS coordinates.

Your backup ID is shown in the App’s Settings. Anyone who has the ID can load the backup on their device, so keep it private. If you load a different backup ID, the plates on your device are replaced with the plates in that backup.

Backups are stored with Cloudflare, which hosts our server. When the App connects, Cloudflare receives your IP address, which we use only to limit repeated requests. We do not store it with your backup. To have a backup deleted, email us with its backup ID.

Location

If you grant location permission, the App may use your approximate or precise location while you use it to show nearby states, record where you spotted a plate, and evaluate location-based achievements. Location is not continuously tracked in the background.

Purchases

Unlock purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple or Google and validated through RevenueCat. We receive purchase and entitlement status (for example, whether the App is unlocked) so we can unlock features. Payment details are handled by the store; we do not receive your full payment card information.

Analytics and crash data

To understand how the App is used, improve it, and fix problems, the App uses the following third-party services:

• PostHog (product analytics and error tracking). The App sends usage events such as app opens, screens viewed, plates spotted or removed, search terms you type when browsing a state, feature usage (for example, voice search), unlock and purchase outcomes, and error reports. These events are linked to your backup ID (see Backups above), not to your name or email address.
• Sentry (crash reporting and diagnostics). When the App crashes or encounters an error, Sentry receives diagnostic information such as the error details, device model, operating system, app version, and IP address. Sentry may also record a replay of a small sample of sessions, and of sessions where an error occurs, to show what led to a problem. Text and images on screen are masked in these recordings.

Both services receive standard device and network information, such as device type, operating system, app version, and IP address, which may be used to estimate your approximate region. Analytics events do not include your GPS coordinates; where location is relevant, only the U.S. state is recorded. Voice search audio and transcripts are not sent to these services.

If you send feedback or report a missing plate, your submission includes the same backup ID so we can understand the issue in context.

We use this information only to operate and improve the App. We do not sell it, and the App does not use third-party advertising. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies: PostHog, Sentry, and Cloudflare.

Children

The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
